About the Pupil Premium Grant
The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) was introduced by the Government to raise the attainment of students deemed ‘disadvantaged’. National GCSE figures show that in 2015, 36% of disadvantaged students obtained 5 or more A*-C grades including English and maths compared to 63% of other students and 38% of disadvantaged students achieved A*-C in English and maths compared to 65% of others. By raising the attainment of disadvantaged students, the PPG is intended to enable schools to close these gaps.
The secondary school PPG per pupil for 2018 to 2019 is as follows:
- Pupils recorded receiving free school meals (FSM) or who have received free school meals in the last 6 years (Ever 6 FSM): £935
- Looked-after children (LAC) defined in the Children Act 1989 as one who is in the care of, or provided with accommodation by, an English local authority: £2,300
- Children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority in England and Wales because of adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order: £2,300
- Pupils recorded as Ever 6 Service Child or in receipt of a child pension from the Ministry of Defence: £300
It is up to schools themselves to decide how the funding is best spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision would be most beneficial for the individual students within their responsibility.
The Ethos behind the use of pupil premium funding at St Bede’s Inter-Church School
St Bede’s Inter-Church School uses pupil premium funding to introduce and develop strategies that have been proven to accelerate progress and raise attainment in educational settings. In particular we use evidence provided by the Education Endowment Foundation (EFF). The EEF has collated research in strategies used in education to support students and used this to estimate the additional months progress we might expect students to make as a result of each of these approaches being used in school.
We also recognise that whilst it is important for our students to fulfil their academic potential, they also benefit significantly from pastoral activities and enrichment opportunities. We consider this holistic approach vital to help our students develop into well-rounded, confident and responsible adults. We also believe that student participation in extra-curricular and other enrichment opportunities can benefit their academic performance.
How St Bede’s Inter-Church School is using the PPG
Schools are allocated an amount each year depending on the number of eligible students recorded on-roll in the January census. We evaluate the effect of the expenditure on eligible and other students and this informs the spending for the following year. All actions are carefully monitored and if necessary adjusted over the course of the year according to the progress students are making. The following strategy includes both how we intend to spend our allocation this year and the evaluation of the previous year’s spending.
A Final Thought
St Bede’s Inter-Church School appreciates that many parents do not apply for their child to receive free school meals (FSM). However, students recorded as eligible for FSM can now access far more than simply a meal at lunchtime, for example they may be able to receive extra maths and English tuition, and these benefits can span a period of at least six years from the initial allowance.
We would encourage all parents whose children may be eligible for FSM to pursue this support avenue. It could help their children considerably whilst they are at school and give them access to many more opportunities.
